Stud Service Process
We have a process that we follow in order to ensure pregnancy for your girl, and safety for us and our kennel!
-
For our stud services, we require that your female have a current negative brucellosis blood test within the last 30 days (unless you’re requiring fresh-chilled semen or we will be artificially inseminating your dog.) This is a simple blood draw at your vet, and does take a couple of days for results, so please plan accordingly.
-
We do require you to do progesterone testing with your vet in order to carefully time the insemination & guarantee pregnancy. This is a blood draw done at the vet to time when your girl is ovulating. You'll begin progesterone testing when her discharge is very light to non-existent near the end of her bleeding cycle. See chart below for guidance and action to take given the progesterone numbers she tests at.
This is a chart provided by IDEXX which we go by for breeding. Many breedings are done far too early and result in missed pregnancies. We would like to minimize misses based on timing.
You can usually wait to do the first progesterone number on the 8th day. Do not stop testing until you've reached a number over 5.Below 1.0 ng/mi - no ovarian activity - ACTION: Test every 3 or 4 days
1.0 to 2.0 ng/mi - rise indicates active ovary - ACTION: test in 2 to 3 days
2 to 4.9 no/mi - active ovary - ACTION - Test every 24 hours until you determine 5.05.0 Ovulation!
5 to 6 ng/mi - ACTION - Breed in 2 to 3 days
6 to 11 ng/mi - ACTION - BREED in 1 to 2 days
11 to 19 ng/mi - ACTION - BREED TODAY!
Over 19 ng/mi - BREED IMMEDIATELY if vaginal smear is OK and female is still receptive. This is considered LATE, if you have to ship semen. Hope for the best! Not much can be determined by the numbers after 5, but you should not determine a breeding date until you get a number 5 or over
-
To secure your potential calendar dates for your stud service, a $100 non-refundable reservation fee must be placed, which amount will go towards your total due for services.
-
We do not have a reproduction specialist veterinarian available in our area to do sperm counts; however, we have invested in our own analysis equipment and do confirm that we have a viable collection by request during Side-By-Side appointments.
Of course, you should also plan to get a hotel stay somewhere in the Idaho Falls area if you’re coming from out of town!
