Welcoming Fall And New Parents!

Rainee & Boomer’s Red Teacup Poodle Girl “Freya”

It’s Fall! Here at Idaho Jewels Poodles, we love to welcome the changing of the leaves, and the cool air, as it can be such a relief from all the hot late-Summer activities! Our dogs are sick of panting out in the yard, and they’re excited to see some of the leaves falling, but with that comes some of our Fall Safety tips!

Falling Leaves & Fruit

As beautiful as the falling leaves can be, they can pose potential dangers to dogs if ingested— especially without supervision. Just like toddlers, our furry family members love to put their mouths on anything they can. Piles of leaves and dropped fruit can contain heavy growths of bacteria and mold growth. Teach your dogs as early as you can to not chew on these things as it can make them very sick! One of our favorite products to use is Bitter Yuck spray. It tastes gross for them, but if you’re supervising whatever they put their mouths on, then you can train them not to eat yard debris, your patio furniture, or their own poo, so that they no longer need to be heavily supervised.

Managing Seasonal Allergies & Learning About Seasonal Toxins

Just like people, dogs sometimes get seasonal allergies that are hard to avoid! It’s important to take note of signs your dog is having an allergic reaction, especially during this allergen-heavy season! Read Good Rx’s article below to get a better idea of what to look for in whether your dog suffers from allergens like tree, grass, and weed pollens, or if they may even have year-round allergies!

Unfortunately, Fall Toxins are here again this season too. Seasonal Toxins are different from Seasonal Allergies. They’re incredibly dangerous to all dogkind as a whole, and could be very life threatening if not taken seriously. Things like Antifreeze are incredibly toxic to dogs, as are mushrooms, and even pumpkin spice! The AKC in collaboration with the Pet Poison Helpline, put together a very helpful list of Fall Toxins to avoid during the Fall. Print out the following document to hang on your fridge for a helpful at-a-glance idea of how to keep your pet safe from toxins during any season!

Outdoor Hazards & Rainy Weather

Depending on where you live, it may get extremely rainy during the Fall season. As I write this, we’re getting heavy rain outside! Wet surfaces and slippery leaves can lead to accidents— for both you and your pet! We have a family friend that slipped and tripped over their big dog! She sprained her leg in doing so, and there’s always the hazard of tripping and landing ON your dog when you go outside too. Make sure to be careful, and make sure your dog’s nails are trimmed down, and paw pads shaved, so that they can get a firm grip on the ground too! We don’t want you falling, and we don’t want your pet falling either! It’s not fun for anyone!

Temperature Changes

Being aware of temperature fluctuations is KEY to managing your dog’s potty schedule. Our dogs hate going potty out in the rain, and sometimes that means delaying the potty schedule, or going out a little earlier to avoid them needing to go outside when it’s pouring! It’s also a great time to train your dog to use an indoor potty box, such as The City Loo! This potty training solution can be the answer to sending your pup out in the cold, and risking them getting sick in the chilly weather.

As the temperature drops, make sure to continue taking your dog outside regularly, and dress them up to keep warm, so that they can stay comfortable in the chill! Read the article below to learn about the warning signs of hypothermia, and how to respond Though this may seem like a Winter issue, in places where Winter comes early, it’s a must to prep yourself on for the Fall Season!

Welcoming Our New Feature: Parent Pages

Olivia

Some of you may have noticed by now, but with the changing of the seasons, we’re also now showing off our current mamas on our Parent Dogs page, and now each mama has their own page where you can learn more about them, their current litter, their previous puppies, and testimonials from customers who bought one of their puppies! We’ve also added some of these features to our daddies, namely a gallery of the puppies they’ve produced in the past. You can gain access to these galleries by visiting our Parent Dogs page, and clicking the daddy you’re interested in learning more about!
